EC schedule revealed
The first match of the EC has been played: LEN agreed with broadcasters on the final schedule of the European Championships.
Though the draw of the Euro Champs has been conducted two months ago, the finalization of the EC program is always a difficult issue to agree on: firstly, LEN’s Office makes a plan, then negotiates in several rounds with EBU – the organization holding the broadcasting rights -, and host broadcaster MTV (Hungarian National Television).
Generally, the most difficult part of this process is to reconcile with EBU, as all the ‘big fish’ national televisions – like RAI, and Spanish TVE - needs to have their respective national teams’ matches at the appropriate time so they could broadcast them.
Italian men’s national team got arguably the best slots to play, three times at 19:00, right before Hungary. It has been cleared long time ago that the hosts own the last matches of each day. Spain was able to get an additional match starting at 20:30, beside the one they play with the Hungarians on the very first day.
LEN is more flexible anyways than FINA – at the World Championships, a strict program is followed, on which based on each team must play at least once in the morning, except the hosting nation. At the EC, the schedule can be focused on the bigger matches to begin at TV-friendlier times, given e.g. the debutant Georgian team playing at the earlier slots, and the great match-ups to be played at late afternoon in general.
As the schedule is revealed, now fans have all the information to buy tickets for the matches they want. The first block of the men’s group stage games - including four matches starting at 11:30 a.m. - is accessible with one ticket, while spectators need to have another one to watch the last two matches of the day. During the women’s preliminary rounds, one ticket provides entry for all the four matches of the day.
The starting times for the host national teams haven’t changed: men’s matches will begin at 20:30 and women’s games at 17:30 each day during the group stage. Then, their schedule will depend on the rankings as well as other teams’.
The opener match of the EC will feature Croatia against Germany on Monday, 14th July at 11:30 a.m. Two years ago, in Eindhoven, this match-up resulted in a tough, memorable game, with a slightly surprising German victory.
