SHAKTI IS BACK!

Erkel Theatre

2ndJuly, 2023. at 7:30 P.M.

We are happy to announce that the world-famous Shakti will also visit Hungary during its 2023 tour on Sunday, July 2 at 8:30 p.m. at the Erkel Theater.

The British guitarist, composer John McLaughlin, a pioneer of fusion jazz, has had a major impact on the history of jazz and rock in many different ways. First of all, as a member of Miles Davis' early electric groups, but his acoustic guitar trio with Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucia was also decisive in the musical life. ("Friday Night in San Francisco").

In 1970, he met Guru Sri Chinmoy and through him he connected with the Hinduism and Eastern mysticism. During this time, he became a vegetarian, led a puritanical lifestyle and, apart from meditation, devoted his life exclusively to music and perfecting his guitar playing. Sri Chinmoy named him Mahavisnu. McLaughlin used this name to name his newly formed formation, which became known as the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Along with Weather Report and Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra was the most influential fusion band of the seventies.

After the dissolution of the Mahavishnu Orhestra, he created Shakti and teamed up with virtuoso excellent Indian musicians to explore the fusion of East and West.

Since then, McLaughlin has been working regularly with Zakir Hussain.

In January 2023, they embarked on a common world tour to celebrate the band's 50th anniversary and half a century since the birth of Shakti. With them are the charismatic singer Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram. Today's line-up honors the legacy of the original band by acknowledging their traditions while continuing to push past existing boundaries into new musical landscapes.
