The Art of the Brick® launches at KOMPLEX
One-of-a-kind LEGO® brick art exhibition by Nathan Sawaya
Opens at 30. September 2022.
Hailed as one of CNN’s 10 must-see exhibitions, The Art of the Brick is now coming to Budapest.
In a world-first, New York-based artist Nathan Sawaya uses LEGO® bricks as the sole art medium for this critically acclaimed exhibition which features primarily 3-dimensional sculptures and oversized portraits.
LEGO has never before been synonymous with art but Sawaya’s brick sculptures are highly technical showing his devotion to scale and colour, a passion which converts the everyday toy into masterpieces.
“I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to LEGO since it is a toy that many children have at home and one that adults have a sentimental attachment to. I elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before. I also appreciate the cleanliness of the medium; the right angles, the distinct lines. As so often in life, it is a matter of perspective. Up close, the shape of the brick is distinctive. But from a distance, those right angles and distinct lines change to curves,” explains Sawaya.
In July 2011 Sawaya won for Most Creative Unusual Art at the 2011 Unique Art Awards in New York City. The Unique Art Awards recognise unique artists around the world for non-traditional artwork.
"It was an honour to be nominated along with some of the most innovative artists in the world," said Sawaya. "Events like this are a great opportunity to share unique art among a broad audience."
Making Forbes’ List of Risk Taking Entrepreneurs, Sawaya explained Brick Art’s humble beginnings, “to ease the stress of being a corporate lawyer in Manhattan, I built sculptures out of all kinds of material [including] a self- portrait out of LEGO bricks.” Sawaya’s popularity quickly grew, inspiring him to leave law to concentrate on his art.
Sawaya has been featured on some of the leading talk shows and news programs in the States including The Today Show, Late Night with David Letterman, The Colbert Report and CBS Sunday Morning. He has been a keynote speaker at Google Zeitgeist alongside Richard Branson and Tony Hawk. Sawaya’s art studio in New York is dedicated to his passion and includes hundreds of boxes of filled with 1.5 million LEGO pieces. In fact Sawaya is so passionate about his LEGO art that he has a tattoo of a LEGO brick ingrained on the inside of his left wrist.
Sawaya has already exhibited at a number of distinguished galleries and museums internationally including the Time Warner Centre in New York, the Art and Culture Centre in Hollywood and the Spot Gallery in Paris.
As part of the exhibition a Play and Build area has been created where children big and small can participate in great fun activities tailored to different age groups and skill levels. The sessions run for 45 minutes and must be pre-ordered.
